Roaring Fork Rauchbier is a nod to the classic Bamberg-style smoked Märzenbiers. These are typically much smokier lagers, but we wanted to test the waters by only using 27% beachwood smoked malt. We felt this was an approachable amount of smoke which melds nicely with the underlying lager.
In the early days of German brewing, drying malt over open flame was the norm. As modern malting techniques advanced, this method disappeared, as did many of the beers that were brewed this way. Schlenkerla Brewing and Spezial Brewing Company have kept the style alive in Bamberg and make some of the most amazing smoked beers in the world.
We hope you will enjoy our interpretation of the style.
